The Space Between
Anne Fraser
We stand in one another's life
without movement -
the trained gaze,
a long list
of self-amendments.
Grocer's roses wilt
across the table,
the many entrances
left behind us;
your cat occupies
the space between us,
open-eyed, stilled,
like a fish tossed
from the water's edge.
